“The reason I had a lot of difficulty talking about this is that I was extremely overwhelmed by shame,” Khalifa, whose real name is Sarah Joe Chamoun, said on The Louis Theroux Podcast.
“I used to have a visceral reaction to hearing the name Mia and knowing that if someone is calling me that name, they are seeing me in a way that I don’t want to be seen, but this has much more to do with my mental health than with the bigger picture of things.”
The influencer shared that she had to undergo therapy for nine years before finally feeling ready to make big decisions. “It’s not because of what I went through in the industry. It’s what I had to go through to get to a point in my life where I feel like I’m in a healthy mindset to make decisions in my life,” she recounted.
She also urged young women to know themselves before taking big steps. “When you’re 19, 20, 21, 18 most of the time, that’s what they expect, you don’t know what you want for your life or what you want out of your life. You don’t even know yourself that young. You shouldn’t be making life-changing decisions when you’re that young,” she added.
